Coaching & Young Riders

We pride ourselves on having a strong youth section in the club providing a wide range of activities for youngsters from those who have just learned how to ride through to experienced youth racers.

Whitworth Park Saturday Morning Coaching Sessions

Do you have a youngster aged 4 to 11 wanting to do more cycling? This where you need to bring them - all welcome just turn up with a bike and helmet please!

Kids coaching takes place usually twice a month (see dates in the newsletters here or the calendar on the homepage) starting at 9.30 to 10:45am on a Saturday morning at Whitworth Park in Darley Dale. The activities are run by British Cycling qualified coaches and include basic riding skills, developing confidence with individual and team exercises and games. The children involved in these sessions range in age from around 4 to 11 and vary greatly in ability. The aim of each session is to improve the ability and confidence of young riders in challenging and fun ways.

The club also runs three weeks of cycling activity sessions each summer holiday. There is an award scheme to encourage riders to develop, with a bronze, silver and gold award. Dates will be published when available.

Youth club run

Once a month from Crich (see club newsletter or calendar on the homepage for dates). Riders need to be at least 10 years

of age, a member of British Cycling (Silver) or a CTC member and capable of riding 20 to 30 miles. All riders must have a well maintained bike,

clothing appropriate to the conditions, and some basic equipment. This must include a helmet, gloves, rain jacket, drink, and a spare innertube. Parents/guardians are encouraged to join the ride. If you would like to attend the ride please email Andrew Briggs at andrew@briggsfamily.me.uk

Coaching Sessions

At various times during the year we run road racing, grass track and cyclocross coaching sessions which are great for developing skills, for details of these see the club newsletter and follow the club on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news

British Schools Cycling Association

The British School Cycling Association runs regional and national events for young riders with Matlock CC hosting some events. East Midlands events are listed in the newsletter and details of national events can be found on the BSCA website.

Road Racing

Road Races for under 16s take place on closed circuits such as the Darley Moor circuit we use near Ashbourne. If you would like to race you need to have a British Cycling race licence. This is generally a good idea as it means you can sign on to races well in advance. You can get a race licence for free from the British Cycling website, or you get one when you join as a Bronze, Silver or Gold Race member. For an Under 12, Race Silver membership is £15 a year and provides Liability Insurance as well as other discounts and benefits.

Alternatively, you can buy a Day Licence on the day of the race, but only if there is space remaining - some events will sell out, so booking in advance can be an advantage!

More info on licences is here:

There are opportunities for young riders to try their hand at track racing. Matlock CC have access to regular youth coaching sessions at the Derby Arena Velodrome Sessions are open to all Matlock CC riders who are full claim members aged 9 to under 16. Riders do not need to have previous track experience but do need to have a good base fitness to access these sessions ie be able to ride for 20 minutes at a time at a strong pace (not racing pace) and be able to work in a group and take instruction from coaches. The sessions are run by British Cycling qualified track coaches. For general information please contact Martin Holmes (see contact page for details). You can find out more here
